RAFAEL HERNANDO DE LA CUERDA

GUEST LECTURER

Rafael Hernando de la Cuerda studied architecture at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ETSAM UPM, where he obtained his degree in 1990 and his PhD in Architecture in 2016 with a dissertation on Fernando García Mercadal y el Movimiento Moderno

Since 2003 he teaches (degree and master) at Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Alcalá UAH, where he coordinates the subjects on hydraulic and energy systems.

For years, he has conducted Final Degree Projects and Final Master's Projects, promoting a rigorous and expressive materiality in the design process, as well as the integration of theory and practice.

Guest professor at several universities and institutions, his research work has been published among others by the Construction History Society of America, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus, Editions A. and J Picard Paris, Universidad Nacional Autonóma de México UNAM, Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura de Quito, Instituto Juan de Herrera, Universidad de Alcalá, Universidad de Valencia, Universidad de Burgos, Universidad de Sevilla, Editorial Lampreave, and Fundación Alejandro de la Sota.

He has collaborated at Fundación COAM -with Ana Rodríguez and Fernando Altozano- in the programming and direction of the monthly congresses Arquitecturas Construidas, held in 2007.

He is a member of Spanish Society of Construction History since its foundation in 1996, carrying out activities of dissemination and consolidation of the discipline, such as the organization of national and international congresses, among others.

In the professional field, since 1991, he works as an architect in his own architecture office, Rodriguez and Hernando Arquitectos, based in Madrid, in collaboration with Ana Rodriguez Garcia, understanding professional practice, teaching work and academic research as complementary facets of their architectonical point of view. Their response is global and integrated, without renouncing to any of the technical, aesthetic, climatic, ecological or economic factors that intervene in the architecture project. They have developed very diverse programs in use as in scale, with a working method based on reflection, research, and in the exhaustive analysis of each specific work, rather than the simple instrumental application of procedures. Their work has been published and exhibited in national and international forums, and has received awards and distinctions.
