María Arquero de Alarcón is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning and Director of the Master of Urban Design at the University of Michigan Taubman College. Operating at the intersection of architecture, landscape, and urbanism, her work interrogates the agency of design promoting cultural and environmental values in the agenda of urban sustainability.
Arquero de Alarcon is founding partner of MAde-Studio, a research-based design practice based in Ann Arbor. As partner at MAde-Studio, her more recent projects articulate urban and landscape strategies in response to the urgent environmental challenges of the postindustrial legacy in the Great Lakes Region. Together with this research based projects, the firm works in collaborative, small scale, open space interventions in partnership with local groups. MAde Studio has been recognized with three Honor Awards from the Michigan AIA, an ACSA Faculty Design Award and two Boston Society of Architects Citations.
Arquero de Alarcón has taught and lectured in multiple academic institution in the US and abroad. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, she practiced through interdisciplinary collaborations and as an independent consultant in international settings in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East. Her work is published in the edited volumes Mapping Detroit: Land, Community, and Shaping a City, the forthcoming Third Coast Atlas: Prelude to a Plan of the Great Lakes Region, the Michigan Journal of Sustainability, Architect Magazine’s “Next Progressives”, Green and Building Design, PLOT, and UHF. She holds degrees in Architecture and Urbanism from the Madrid Polytechnic University, a master of Advanced Studies in Landscape Architecture from the E.T.H. Zurich, and a master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design from the G.S.D., Harvard University. She is a Spanish Registered Architect, member at A.S.L.A. and A.P.A.
