About the MCH Master
Jointly organized by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and ETH Zurich, the Master in Collective Housing offers an intensive one-year educational experience that brings together talented architects, designers, and researchers from around the world. With a highly international cohort and faculty, the program has established itself as a unique platform for advanced architectural education, encouraging dialogue between cultures, disciplines, and professional practices.
The program is centered on the study of collective housing as one of the defining architectural, environmental, and social challenges of our time. Housing remains at the core of contemporary debates on urban development, sustainability, affordability, social equity, and quality of life. Through an interdisciplinary approach, MCH encourages students to critically examine these issues while developing innovative design proposals that respond to the complex realities of today’s cities.
Learning at MCH combines design studios, seminars, workshops, lectures, and research activities led by internationally recognized architects, scholars, and practitioners. This dynamic educational model allows students to engage with multiple perspectives while strengthening their ability to translate research into architectural design. The program also benefits from an extensive international network of guest professors and collaborators, exposing students to a broad range of methodologies and professional experiences.
Throughout its evolution, MCH has continuously adapted its curriculum to respond to the changing landscape of architectural practice. While maintaining its strong focus on design excellence and critical thinking, the program has incorporated emerging topics that are increasingly relevant for contemporary professionals. Leadership, office management, entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary collaboration, digital workflows, and the integration of artificial intelligence into architectural processes have become essential components of the educational experience, preparing graduates to navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving profession.
Over the years, MCH has built an international community of alumni who now contribute to architectural practice, academia, research institutions, and public organizations across the world. Their professional achievements reflect the program’s commitment to combining academic excellence with practical relevance, fostering architects capable of addressing contemporary urban challenges through innovation, responsibility, and critical thinking.
A Decade of Recognition
Receiving this recognition for the tenth consecutive year confirms not only the quality of the academic program but also the strength of the collaborative ecosystem that supports it. The continued dedication of our faculty, visiting professors, researchers, institutional partners, administrative staff, and collaborators has been fundamental in maintaining the high standards that distinguish MCH. Equally important are the curiosity, creativity, and commitment demonstrated by each new generation of students, whose ideas continually enrich the program and contribute to its ongoing evolution.
More than a ranking, this recognition reflects the strength of a community built over the years by committed students, dedicated faculty, inspiring guest professors, engaged alumni, and valued institutional partners. Their ideas, work, and enthusiasm continue to define the spirit of MCH and reinforce its position as a leading platform for architectural education. We thank each of them for their contribution and look forward to continuing to foster learning, collaboration, and innovation in the field of collective housing while preparing future architects to shape more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities.
