José Mayoral

José Mayoral holds a PhD from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and IUAV University of Venice (2022). He has taught courses and workshops at various institutions, including the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2016–2017) and Harvard GSD, where he was appointed Teaching Associate and Research Associate (2014–2015), as well as the Academy of Art University (2015–2023) and ETSAM (2021–present). He also holds a Master in Architecture from Harvard GSD (2014), where he received the award for Best Portfolio, and a degree in Architecture from the ETSA of Seville (2010).

Since 2018, he has been the founder of the architecture practice PRÁCTICA, which has received 22 awards in architectural competitions. His work has received the COAM Award (2021 and 2024) and the BIAU Award (2024), among others. He has also worked at several internationally renowned architecture practices, including Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland (2010–2012), and Abalos-Sentkiewicz in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA (2014).

Most recently, he curated the 20th Chilean Architecture and Urbanism Biennial, titled “Diálogos Impostergables”. His work was exhibited at the MoMA (2015), and he co-designed the Ephemeral Urbanism Pavilion (2016) and the Somes River Pavilion (2021) at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

His publications include co-authoring the book Urbanismo Efímero: Cities in Constant Flux (2016), co-editing Planning with Conservation: Looking at Agra (2016), co-authoring and co-editing Ephemeral Urbanism: Does Permanence Matter? (2017), co-editing the monograph Hashim Sarkis Studios 1998–2017 (2017), and serving as guest editor of Materia magazine (2019).

José Mayoral has also received several scholarships and awards, including the ARQUIA Scholarship (2010), the Talentia Scholarship (2012–2014), the Faculty Design Award at Harvard GSD (2014), and the CONICYT Scholarship (2015–2019).
