Piet Eckert

Climate, Metabolism and Architecture

Piet Eckert (b. 1968, Mumbai) studied architecture at ETH Zurich and Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture in New York. He gained professional experience at OMA in Rotterdam, Los Angeles, and Seoul before founding E2A in Zurich with his brother Wim Eckert in 2001. He is a Full Professor at Dortmund Technical University and has taught at leading institutions, including the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio.

E2A is headquartered in Zurich, with offices in Berlin and Warsaw. The practice operates across Europe, engaging in a wide range of public, cultural, corporate, and residential projects. Notable works include the taz publishing house in Berlin, the Deaconry Bethanien and School Campus Moos in Ruschlikon/Kilchberg, and the Geistlich Areal housing development in Schlieren.

E2A’s architectural approach is defined by the use of hybrid systems and slender, efficient structural solutions—resulting in buildings that demonstrate resilience on multiple levels. In recent years, the office has increasingly focused on urban transformation and inner-city densification, addressing the complexities of contemporary urban environments through projects of greater scale and typological diversity. Key examples include WankdorfCity3 in Bern, the Zurich Nord High-Rise, and forward-thinking new-work infrastructures such as in.grid in Berlin and MHub IPZ in Zurich-Dubendorf.

E2A’s work has been widely published internationally, including in AV Monografías, E2A – Logic and Desire, a+u, E2A – Strategic Methodologies, 2G Magazine of Gustavo Gili Editors, Silent Form (2014 with Park Books) and E2A / Architecture (2011, monograph with Hatje Cantz).
